4. History of formation and development of Quy Nhon Airport, Binh Dinh
Phu Cat Airport was built in 1966, then known as Go Quanh Airport and was the base of the 60th Tactical Air Force of the Republic of Vietnam Air Force.
After 1975, this airport was directly managed by the Ministry of Defense of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. At the same time, the government approved a project to renovate and upgrade Phu Cat Airport into a civil airport to serve the people. In September 1984, the first commercial flight took off from Phu Cat.
On January 17, 2015, the Vietnam Airports Corporation started the project to expand and upgrade the operational capacity at Phu Cat Airport. The expansion project ensured 7 aircraft parking positions instead of 4 as originally planned. Additionally, the lighting system for the parking area and signal lights were supplemented to facilitate night flights. This project was completed and put into operation in 2015.
In January 2020, Quy Nhon Airport officially became Phu Cat International Airport.
