Fukuoka was built in 1944 by the Japanese Army under the name Mushiroda Airport. In 1945, the airport was renamed Itazuke Airport under American management. By December 1970, the airport was officially returned to Japan. It wasn't until April 1972 that the airport was renamed Fukuoka Airport and has kept this name until now.
